About "Mr. Joe" Marotta:
Over the years, Mr. Marotta addressed his share of North Shore concerns: Noisy businesses, saturation of social services, senior housing, transportation, the redevelopment of the former Stapleton home port and the creation of the Special Hillside Preservation District. Mr. Marotta owned the Tompkinsville Pharmacy for 25 years, getting his start there as a stock boy while a student at Curtis High School. He received bachelor's degree from the St. John's University School of Pharmacy in Queens, where he was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Fraternity. An active parishioner of Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church Tompkinsville, Mr. Marotta served on the board of the Downtown Staten Island Council and was the chairman of the Social Action Committee and spent hours volunteering in the church's food pantry. He was also devoted to the Augustinian order. Lifelong Tompkinsville resident Joseph Marotta, who for almost a quarter of a century was synonymous with Staten Island's Community Board 1, died of an apparent heart attack, just hours after completing the New York City Marathon. He was 66.
