December 26th Blizzard

Over 20 inches hit the city from December 26th and straight into the 27th.  Staten Island probably had more, but our official totals never seem to hit the news until much later, if at all.

The Ferry held back some trips and delayed others.  Our train and buses came to a halt.  We have restricted speeds on the bridge and many streets have not seen a plow come their way yet.

On my street alone, the snow in the middle is almost as high as my car.

It became one big giant snow day for all.

Update:  We were measured at 29", and most had at least two snow days.  Many rumor swirling about why some many streets in Staten Island and Queens, especially, were never plowed more than 48 hours after the storm.

Here are a few photos:

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays From Positively Staten Island

We wish you all a Great Holiday and Happy New Year.

We are taking the rest of the year off to concentrate on Christmas, family and the animals we are getting new homes for.  Plus that dreaded thing we call work.

Our mission here is to promote and create the Staten Island we all want, and should have.  We have been building this site over the last year and in 2011, we will be adding new projects in the works.

We hope you all take a few moments in the New Year to think of the most positive steps you can take to have the life you want.

The VNPs will be continuing to showcase our wonderful Island, here online as well as our other passions such as animal rescue.  Staten Island is their home too, and we hope to get as many into homes here as possible in 2011.

In the New Year, we encourage all readers to consider a resolution to become an active part of Staten Island.  Consider volunteering, helping others and showcasing your talents in any creative or helpful way.

We look forward to hearing from all of you and hope you enjoy the content on this site.

Stayed tuned in 2011 for our re-launch of the newsletter, Inside Staten Island, our new projects, the new spotlight postings, and many other creative ideas we are brewing at this moment.  Call us if you want to be a part of the fun.

The City Concealed

The City Concealed: Staten Island Greenbelt from Thirteen.org on Vimeo.

Our local Public Television station, Thirteen is rolling out new episodes of City Concealed. Colin Schoenberger at Thirteen was nice enough to send us the episode online for a small preview.  We thank you Collin.

This definitely does have the “can you believe this is New York City” feel to it, as Collin pointed out.   Many Staten Islanders, already know this and we love it when others take the time to notice and compliment our great home.

The crew from City Concealed went out to find the Heyerdahl House, the ruins of a 1800s stone home in Bucks Hollow, but instead discovered our beautiful Greenbelt.  Surprise!  And welcome to Staten Island.

Take a short break and view this seven-minute video and enjoy the fall colors and trails of our Greenbelt.  Pouch Camp is mentioned.  SAVE POUCH CAMP!

For the full article on this video, visit here.

Thank you to Thirteen for creating such wonderful content, to the shows crew for taking the time to explore their new discovery, to the people of Staten Island who take the time to conserve this vast wonderland and especially to those who are fighting to save Pouch Camp.

And last but not least, to Collin for thinking of us.  We appreciate getting any and everything about Staten Island from the web to help us in creating our site.

BRINGING BROADWAY TO STATEN ISLAND!

New Documentary Highlights Music Scene of Staten Island

When people think of Staten Island, New York they think of the heavy accent,
spiked hair, and orange skin that has been portrayed on such popular culture
hits like True Life and Jersey Shore.

We set out to show people another side of “The Forgotten Borough” with The
Others
, a comprehensive documentary about the music scene that exits on Staten
Island
. Local shows in the area can receive over 300 people in attendance and
have a lively atmosphere that rivals that for mainstream concerts.  The scene
that exists in Staten Island is diverse with genres ranging from Hip Hop,
Alternative, Indie, Pop, Punk, Metal, and Hardcore.

“The Others” takes you inside the practices and shows as well as sit down
interviews with local bands.  From the highs to the lows you will hear from the
musicians about their accomplishments, their band’s history and what is like to
go through the recording process.

"The Others" is scheduled for release in 2011.
